Giving back to the community is at the core of Zimmer's philosophy. Through our radio stations and marketing expertise, we have a voice in the community. We feel a strong sense of responsibility to use that voice for the betterment of our community and the thousands of listeners whose lives we interact with daily. The moment we learned about True North's lifesaving work and the silent epidemic of domestic violence plaguing Missouri, we knew there had to be something we could do.
It started as a conversation with the morning show on 96.7FM KCMQ Shags & Trevor. Shags bought a new house and learned that the house carried with it a tragic story. Always curious, Shags decided to dive into the story and find out what happened. He was blown away, and what he learned changed his perspective forever.
For these reasons, and dozens more, is why 96.7 KCMQ is proud to partner with True North for their first radiothon on August 26, 2022.
About True North
“On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.”
Missouri has the third-highest rate of domestic violence in the country, according to the Violence Policy Center. Thousands of men and women in Missouri are trapped in dangerous domestic situations and do not have the resources to obtain the assistance they require.
That’s where True North comes in.
True North provides comprehensive domestic and sexual violence victim services. Their services are designed to empower those abused or battered by an intimate partner. True North enables them to begin the healing process and regain control of their lives.
True North's mission is to provide safe housing, advocacy, and support to all victims. The advocacy and support may encompass initial contact through continuous counseling, protection, housing assistance, and appropriate legal actions.
In the last year, True North has:
- Answered more than 4,500 calls on their hotline that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
- Provided emergency beds that were occupied nearly 9,000 times.
- Provided over 8,000 hours of additional support services, including their Domestic Violence Enforcement Unit (DOVE), counseling, hospital advocacy, and outreach.
- Served nearly 1,000 people in their shelter.
