Why Are Keywords Important for SEO? [VIDEO]

Have you ever gone to Google to search for something and one word in a whole list of pre populated options pops up for you? This is simply due to what people are searching based around those keywords. Keywords and phrases used in your website content make it possible for people to find your business.

This is extremely important for businesses to be targeting keywords pertaining to their industry and brand that their target audience will be searching for. You will find that settling on the right keywords for your SEO is going to be trial and error, but the basics are easy to understand.

Finding the Best Keywords for Your SEO

Here is Director of Sales Carrie Berkbuegler sharing four common mistakes people make when building a keyword strategy for their business' online content:

What to Focus On

Your keywords should be an ongoing and ever-evolving thing that should be updated every month or so. Reevaluating older keywords and often replacing them with more updated keywords to stay up-to-date with your industry and branding. Using more specific keyword phrases are designed to bring the right visitors to your website.

It is also important to focus on diversifying your keywords. Like anything else with your brand, you are not going to stand out if you are using the exact same keywords as your competitors. You should try out new keywords and do your own research to see the progress. Not only that, but doing research on who else uses these keywords? How do you truly stand out? By providing great content that answers the questions YOUR customers are asking with their keyword searches.

Optimizing Keywords

Let’s say you are running the website of an online pet store. You may want to create a keyword list for all of the dog-related products, and a keyword list for cat-related products. Your next step would be to segment individual groups into small subgroups (cat treats, cat toys, cat snacks) and then even more specific groups for each product (low-fat cat treats, luxury cat snacks, etc).

Here are some examples of how you can implement the “low-fat cat treats” keyword group:

  • Using the keyword in the title of the page.
  • Adding the keyword into the URL (online.petstore.com/cat/treats/lowfat).
  • Using the keyword (low-fat cat treats) and variations of it throughout the page copy.
  • Using the keyword in the meta tags and meta description.
  • Using the keyword in the image alt text.

What This Means

We have learned that keywords are an integral part of SEO strategies. We encourage you to try implementing keywords on your website, especially in your blog section so Google can pick it up. The last thing you want is a customer searching for you, but you aren’t there. Keywords can help you build relevancy on search pages, and while you may not see results overnight, after some time you will.
